Lawrenceville, N.J. – Rider rallied from an eight-point deficit in the final 1:08 of regulation and went on to defeat Drexel in overtime, 89-81. The Broncs (4-1) were 4-for-6 from the floor in the extra period and held Drexel to just one field goal in the overtime period. The loss dropped the Dragons record to 2-2.
Jason and Ryan Thompson combined for 12 of Rider's 14 points in overtime. The Broncs scored the first four points in the frame and did not trail in the overtime period.
Drexel trailed by as many as five early in the second half, but went on a 21-8 run that culminated on a pair of Scott Rodgers free throws that made it 75-67 with 1:08 remaining. However, Harris Mansell hit a three-pointer and Drexel turned the ball over with :55 left on the clock. After a Rider timeout, Jason Thompson was fouled by Chaz Crawford. It was the fifth foul on Crawford and after making two free throws, the Broncs trailed 75-72. Bashir Mason was fouled immediately, but missed the front end of a one-and-one, which allowed Rider to have a shot to tie it. The Broncs did just that when Ryan Thompson knocked down a trey with six seconds to play. Drexel had the final possession of regulation and almost won the game but Tramayne Hawthorne's tip on a missed three-pointer by Mason bounced off the rim and the two teams went to the extra period tied at 75-75.
Mason led Drexel with a career-high 26 points. The senior was 10-for-19 from the floor and had four three-pointers. Mason also had four steals and moved into third place on the school's career steals list with 170, passing former teammate Phil Goss. Frank Elegar and Chaz Crawford each added season-highs with 13 points. Elegar also had nine rebounds. Matt Stevenson had a solid game off the bench and had seven points, all of them coming in the second half.
All five Rider starters scored in double figures. Jason Thompson led the way with 24 points and 11 rebounds. He was 14-for-17 from the free throw line. Mansell added 17 points and had eight rebounds and three key three-pointers. The Broncs shot 52 percent from the floor, including 8-for-15 from long range, and made 27 of their 32 free throw attempts
Drexel will host Toledo on Wednesday night at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. and the contest can be heard on WNTP 990 AM and on the web at drexeldragons.com.
